That won’t bend to the wind or the heavy weight of time
Of the shipbuilder stranded two thousand miles from tide.

The rhythm of work, hammered steel and painted earth would ease the mind
Recollections of home to galvanize the tired iron of his soul
and day after day the pulleys and the chains stabilize
the boat that emerges to defy horizon lines.

He knows the way things are going he won’t ever feel at home but he’ll try
to build something to bear the equation of distance over time
and to carry the infinite load of the modern signifier
his boat will go up and there he will abide

Infinite the ocean’s currents, infinite the clouded sky’s geometry
But the myths overwhelm and in the drought a desolate economy

Sontianan never sailed from the tired prairie soil still we strive
to build boats of words catch the wind of the world in signs
As hard as we try the metaphors won’t take us home but they might
